Bus or Truck Fires

From Station 6 Wiki

[edit] First Arriving Engine Company

  • Approach scene cautiously (Hazardous Materials ?), position apparatus as a barrier, shielding the scene. Use traffic cones and emergency traffic lights to direct traffic away from the scene. Position up wind /up hill if possible.
  • Transmit a brief initial report of conditions on arrival and establish Command (IC). Consider the need for a water supply.
  • Assess life hazards and exposures. Identify incident priorities and potential problems. Have BCSO respond for traffic control.
  • Consider placement of aerial device to protect exposures.
  • Stretch an initial 1-3/4” attack line to protect occupants and paths of egress. Consider foam line(s) if indicated.
  • Identify a Hot Zone and deny entry to unauthorized personnel.
  • Advise 2nd due engine of water supply status and location of hydrant.
  • Direct 2nd due engine of the need for additional attack lines.
  • Approach the vehicle from a 45 degree angle, sweeping underneath and cool the area near the fuel tank. Control the main body of fire from a distance. Attack from the unburned side if possible.
  • If a water supply is established, consider 2-1/2” hose lines if indicated.
  • When the fire is controlled, stabilize the vehicle and secure the batteries.
  • Complete a secondary search and overhaul the vehicle. Consider hazardous materials in storage/cargo areas.

[edit] Second Arriving Engine Company

  • Consider the need and location for a water supply if not already established.
  • Position apparatus in most advantageous position or as directed by the IC.
